Husk Distillery – North Tumbulgum NSW
Husk Rum is a farm to bottle product that is made and bottled entirely at the 150acre property Husk Distillery in Tumbulgum, Northern NSW.
Leithal Designs was brought into the project to complete the drafting work and finesse the architectural design, translating it into a practical every day working distillery, commercial kitchen and cellar door with dining and retail facilities. The goal for the design was to create an industrial multi-functional building which felt like a farm and exuded warmth and hospitality.
Sonia Leith, Principal designer at Leithal designs, worked closely with Husk Distillery to create and deliver a finished structure that spoke to the ‘farm to table’ ethos of the vision whilst meeting the respective fire, building and interior codes for both a hospitality venue and distillery.
The design for this distillery was created with the customer experience in mind from start to finish. The Husk Farm entry gates were designed to hint at what was to come along the sealed gravel driveway which curves up to reveal the expansive views of the distillery building.
Materials such as wood, exposed brickwork, stone, and metal help to create a striking first impression while also paying homage to the building’s industrial function and farm locale. From the practical layout of the space to the details in the finishes, everything was carefully considered with the customer experience in mind.
First impressions for visitors feature an impressive, exposed brick façade and dramatic feature tinted windows with dark trim. These design elements allow the maximum amount of natural light into the building whilst providing diners and visitors with a spectacular view of the outdoor leisure and dining areas and paddock beyond.
The building also includes several other industrial elements – including exposed recycled timber trusses that contributed to the overall look and feel of the space throughout. Beyond the customer facing areas, the distillery was designed to provide ample ventilation along the roof and wall to allow for natural airflow throughout, ensuring the temperature in the production, storage and bottling regions in the building is maintained.
Sonia’s work on this project was instrumental in helping to create a unique and stylish hospitality venue that reflects the farm-to-table philosophy of the owners. The building’s industrial feel was softened with plants and elements that brought the outdoors in, creating a welcoming and comfortable space for all.
